I still remember the instant warm, welcoming feeling as I walked in. I had completed work placement hours at a commercial gym also but the ‘family’ atmosphere of the studio was unlike I’d experienced before. During these placement hours I came in at all sort of what I considered ridiculous hours of the morning and stayed till there were no more sessions at night.
In these few weeks I was learning more than what I had spent reading about in the last 6 months of my course. At the completion of my placement hours Matt and Annette sat down with me and asked what my plans were once I was qualified. Honestly I hadn’t even considered PT as a full time employment opportunity, I enrolled in the course as I felt just working several part time retail jobs was wasting my time away and that I may as well get certified in something at the same time. The fitness industry was and still is booming and the number of PT’s being pumped out is insane so never in a million years did I see myself getting a job straight away. Anyway as they spoke to me they told of everything they could offer as part of a nominee based traineeship at Assist.
The simple fact that I had gained more knowledge in my placement hours than my course then sealed with an abundance of testimonials and amazing before and after results sealed the deal for me. I trained with Matt 3 times a week for a 12 week program to experience their structure and systems first hand. This experience alone taught me a lot and is something I will still refer back to when training my own clients. We focused on increasing my basketball performance through weight training and I went into the season in the best shape I’ve ever been in.
Along with that myself, Matt, Annette and the other nominee at the time would all sit down once a week for a meeting to discuss anything we were struggling with, go over programming, sales training, business development and more. Still to this day the three of us meet every week and bounce ideas off each other.
Being surrounded by people that are driven and enthusiastic to learn and deliver a quality service every day definitely helps with my motivation to better myself as a trainer. The guys at Assist are always encouraging me to develop my knowledge through enrolling in different courses, regular research and studies in any areas I may be interested in as well as doing the exact same thing themselves. I learn best from practical experience and the biggest thing for me was not being scared to try something, in the beginning I was so worried of not doing something perfectly or programming a exercise in where I shouldn’t but as I look back on it now, no experience was bad. Everything experience so far has been something I have learnt from and imperfection is perfectly fine. The more experience I gained and clients I accumulated the better the results I started to generate. And once you start achieving some great results with your clients you start develop confidence in yourself.
I never questioned the systems Assist PT had in place as I had seen all the testimonials that came with it, so knew that if I delivered it to the letter and had the right client to implement all I was saying that they would get a great result. But achieving a clients goal with them is truly one of the best feelings and makes all those long hours worth it! I’d be lying if I told you there wasn’t times where I wanted to quit and take a easier path that guaranteed me more income instantly, starting out isn’t easy and if you think that you can walts in, work 20hr weeks and earn more than $800 a week consistently then your kidding yourself. It’s a grind of waking up at 4.30am, for 1-2 clients then studying for a few hours, chasing up leads, calling every existing client in the database, doing letterbox drops, thinking of new promotions, anything to keep you moving forward.
But as hard as those first few months were, I am so grateful I stuck it out. quick as I truly believe that I am blessed with one of the best jobs in the world. Every day I wake up with the chance to change someone’s life and that’s not something many people can say they get to do. Assist PT offers a support network and wealth of knowledge to fast track your PT development. But if you’re not willing to start from the bottom and put the hours of hard work in, then don’t waste their time. The culture that exists in the Assist family is something very hard to come across and makes those early starts and late finishes a lot easier.
Saying yes to working at Assist is honestly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life. I know that both Matt and Annette want nothing but the best for me in all aspects of my life.
